Buying a putter that s right for you isn t easy. You need to do your homework to find one that fits both your budget and your game, which means learning the different types of putters and clubheads available and their advantages. But doing your homework is worth it because having a good putter, as I often say in my golf lessons, shaves strokes off your golf handicap.

The key considerations when looking for a putter are price, quality, type, clubhead, and alignment system. Face insert, loft, and hosel are additional considerations. I ve talked about these considerations in my golf tips, but here s some additional information about them.

A common putting flaw I see in my golf lessons is excessive wrist action. Increased wrists leads to a loss of control of the putterhead before impact and an abundance of missed putts. With greens in better condition these days, the need for precision in putting has grown. In other words, you must overcome this putting flaw to achieve a lower golf handicap. Enter the long putters.

Long putters curb wrist action by anchoring the putter to a fixed point your stomach or your sternum. While I prefer a regular putter to a long one. I encourage players who take my golf lessons to use whichever putter works for them. I also encourage them to learn the proper technique using

All great golfers have one move they consider the key to their swings. Jack Nicklaus, a great ball striker turns his head slightly to the right just before starting his takeaway. That move triggers his swing, enabling him to strike the ball powerfully. If you research the issue, as I once had a student taking golf lessons do, you’ll find the same is true for Greg Norman, Gary Player, Sam Snead, and even the great Arnold Palmer. They all have a swing secret that keys their swings.

Ben Hogan had a swing secret as well. If you asked tour opponents about it, they would have said it was his cupped left wrist-a move Hogan once highlighted in Life Magazine. And for

years that was thought to be his secret. But while that move was critical to Hogan’s swing, it was only part of why he’s one of the best ball strikers ever. The other part was his right knee-the correct functioning of which enabled him to hit the ball with power and precision.

The concept of plane confuses some players. It also confuses some players that come to me for golf lessons. Many are unclear about what it is and what its impact is on your golf swing. Whether you understand the concept of plane or not, swinging off plane is never good.

Focusing on two points spine angle at address and the position of the left arm on the downswing clears up the confusion about swing plane and explains its effect on your golf swing and your golf handicap.

Supposedly, Tiger Woods used his driver only once in winning the 2006 British Open. In its place, he used low irons and fairway woods. I m not sure exactly sure how many times he used his driver, but it wasn t much, highlighting something I advocate in my golf lessons and golf tips knowing when to leave the driver in the bag cuts strokes from your score and your golf handicap.

Tiger succeeded at the British Open because he played smart golf. That requires strategically positioning the ball when you have to, which in turn means sometimes using the 3-wood, a hybrid club, or a low iron off the tee. Here are some tips on when to use each.
